Pinpointing Your Passion

By Alexis Stiebe

We are all adjusting to today’s new normal and how it has changed our careers and our lives. Recent events may cause us to think about what’s truly important to us. Whatever your current employment situation is right now, you have the potential to change and grow in your career. What is your passion? Now could be the time to dig in and make your dream a reality.

Are you on the path to turn your passion into a career? Consider the following questions when making your next career move:

What job would I be proud to announce to the people in my life?

Having pride in your work can help fuel your passion and motivation. When you feel that what you do is important, or has a positive impact, it can lead to greater satisfaction.

What would an organization need in order for me to be excited about work every day?

Does this organization offer opportunities to learn new skills, the possibility of advancement, or benefits that improve quality of living for you and your family? Think of the company culture and the company values. Having a good cultural fit and sharing the values of the organization you work for can provide support for your passion.

What motivates me to get going in the morning?

Identify what drives you to take action. Your passion should give you motivation to reach your goals. Find the projects and ideas that excite you and keep you going even when life throws you a curve ball.

If money were no object, what would I do with my time and talent?

Think of all the hobbies and interests you have. Think of the knowledge and skill you’ve gained. What would you do with those interests and skills if you were guaranteed success? Build a career path toward that goal.

You may find that you have more than one passion, but not all of them can be turned into a successful career. A hobby you enjoy could become a chore once it becomes your means of income. A skill you excel at could be something you become passionate about the more that you build experience and find success with that talent. Once you pinpoint your passion you can begin to take steps toward turning that passion into a successful and fulfilling career.
